Promote large tannery parks, Centre urged

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 5 Expressing concern over the growing shortage of raw material for the leather industry, industry chamber FICCI has suggested a twin-pronged Government approach of promoting large tannery parks and also setting-up warehouses for facilitating imports of raw leather.

Observing the dismal growth of leather industry for the last few years, the chamber said that the average annual growth rate of this industry was almost negligible from 2001-02 to 2005-06. And, even in the current fiscal year the leather industry grew by only 0.9 per cent for April-February 2006-07. The slow growth of the leather industry implies that employment potential of this labour-intensive sector has not been harnessed adequately.

In a note to the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, the chamber has said since large number of domestic leather units are small and not in a position to engage with foreign suppliers, the Government will have to set up warehouses with cold chains where foreign suppliers can park their raw material for sale in the domestic market.
