Marginal rise in Coonoor tea prices

Coonoor May 6 The marginal increase of 50 p a kg on the average witnessed at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) last week continued on Saturday as the demand was not high enough to push up the bids despite the volume remaining low.

Only 7.5 lakh kg were on offer. This was marginally higher than the volume of last week.

" Secondary orthodox leaf lost Rs 1 a kg. Medium brokens and fannings went for a correction. Smaller CTC dusts gained a rupee a kg. Leafy and powdery orthodox dusts lost Rs 2-3 a kg. ", an auctioneer told Business Line.

On the export front, the buyers for Pakistan bought well-made medium teas for around Rs 42 a kg. The exporters to CIS selected suitable grades for Rs 45.

Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Homedale Estate got the highest price of Rs 83 a kg. Professor came second at Rs 81, Highfield Estate Special Rs 80, Warwick Rs 78, Kannavarai Rs 77, Dhavala, Shanthi Supreme and Selva Ganapathy Supreme Rs 76.

Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Corsley got the highest price of Rs 125 a kg, followed by Chamraj and Sutton at Rs 123, Curzon Rs 120, Glendale and Prammas Rs 110, Parkside, Erinkadu, Havukal and Mailoor Rs 100.

Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 39-42 a kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 53-58 for the brighter liquoring teas. They ranged Rs 41-43 a kg for the plain dust grades and Rs 63-77 for the brighter liquoring sorts.
