Events States - Andhra Pradesh YSR calls for investments in rainfed areas, cold chains Our Bureau
Hyderabad May 8 The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has called for huge investments in rainfed areas, livestock, fisheries and cold chains in developing countries. Delivering the keynote address at the World Agricultural Forum in St Louis (the US) on Tuesday, he said the future investments by all the developing countries had to be made for development of rainfed areas in the same way as they did in the first green revolution in the irrigated areas. "We need to develop appropriate technologies and quality seed suitable for dryland agriculture," he said.
FOOD PROCESSING
Stating that only 5 per cent of all the fruits and vegetables produced in the developing countries were processed, Dr Reddy said huge investments were needed in developing cold chains, processing, packaging and rural infrastructure. Talking on widespread agricultural crisis world over, he said production and productivity levels of various crops were stagnant globally. He pointed out that levels of investments and rate of capital formation in agriculture had been falling in the last one decade. "This has resulted in stagnation in production and productivity levels of various crops," he added.
