GSM mobile growth rate down in April

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 11 Cellular subscriber growth rate dipped in April, with GSM-based operators adding just over four million new users compared to the highest ever addition of 6.1 million in March.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which released the numbers, did not give any reason for the dip in growth.

However, industry sources said that the slump could be attributed to the poor performance of the MTNL and BSNL.

While MTNL lost over two lakh subscribers, BSNL managed to get only three lakh new users.

In comparison, BSNL had reported two million new users in March.

The growth rate of most private operators has remained static.

Bharti Airtel added 1.75 million new users compared to 1.7 million in March, while Hutch added 1.2 million (one million).

The All-India GSM subscriber base grew from 121.43 million in March to 125.57 million in April.

In April, among all circles, Category C circles witnessed the highest rate of growth at 4.36 per cent, followed by Category A circles (4.15 per cent).
