Loans from World Bank, Japan Bank tied up

Systems under the Krishna, the Godavari, the Penna and related dam project areas will be modernised.

Hyderabad May 14 The Andhra Pradesh Government has firmed up plans to take up a massive modernisation programme of the major river delta systems to boost irrigation potential in the next three years.

Accordingly, systems under the Krishna, the Godavari, the Penna and related dam project areas will be modernised. Loans from the World Bank, the Japan Bank and other financial institutions have already been tied up.

WORLD BANK LOAN

For the Nagarjunasagar project on the Krishna river, the World Bank recently approved a long-term loan of Rs 2,250 crore for upgradation and modernisation of the canals and strengthening works.

According to a detailed note prepared by the State Irrigation Department on the major and minor irrigation schemes, for the modernisation of the Godavari delta region, the State Government has prepared a plan, which entails investment up to Rs 1,627 crore with funds from the Japan Bank.

The over-100-year-old delta region of the Godavari, which has been instrumental in making the coastal Andhra region the "rice-bowl" of India, was last modernised to an extent in 1991, after which it has been subjected to neglect, the department note said.

The tendering process for strengthening the sluice gates and relevant structures to withstand flood impact for the Godavari is also on. For the Krishna region, the Department has prepared a modernisation scheme with an investment of about Rs 1,501 crore as loan. Efforts are on to source the entire funds as loan from the Japanese Bank. About 13 lakh acres are expected to be brought under irrigation once this is completed.

Similarly, necessary schemes for the modernisation and strengthening of projects in the Nizamsagar (Rs 398 crore), the Tungabhadra (Rs 446 crore) and the Penna delta region (Rs 554 crore) have also been prepared, the note added.
