`Telephonic directive from Ministry being flouted'

Farmers and landowners have been protesting against forced acquisition of land in the Raigad district.

Mumbai May 17 Despite a three-week-old directive from the Chief Minister to halt land acquisition for the upcoming Special Economic Zone at the Uran-Panvel belt of Raigad District in Maharashtra, the official machinery has continued the acquisition process, landowners in the area have complained.

As far back as April 21, under advise from the Minister concerned , the Principal Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation) had issued telephonic and written directive to the Revenue Department to stop the process of land acquisition until the State Government took a decision on rehabilitation and the Union Government's stand on SEZs became clear.

The officials concerned under clear instructions to halt the process, including document verification and so on, have been flouting the official order, said a representative of landowners.

Farmers and landowners have been protesting against forced acquisition of land in the Raigad district. Some of them have expressed apprehension that official documents may be manipulated to show that their land has already been sold.

One of the landowners told Business Line that some unidentified middlemen claiming proximity to policymakers came to him with a proposal that would ensure the acquisition process for his piece of land could be stopped for pecuniary consideration. The Uran-Panvel belt is said to be facing unsettled conditions in the face of continued threat.
