Our Bureau

Chennai May 18 Star Health and Allied Insurance, India's only operational stand-alone health insurance company, has earned a premium income of Rs 100 crore in 12 months. Today, the company celebrated the first anniversary of its first policy sale.

The 95-odd branches of the company have sold health policies to 25 million people. It has tie-ups with 1,400 hospitals across the country, where policyholders could avail themselves of treatment without having to pay.

On the sidelines of a press conference here today, the company's Chairman, Mr V. Jagannathan, said the claims ratio was "extremely low", but did not want to mention the figure because the board was yet to consider the annual performance results.

125 clinics planned

Star Health's associate company, Star Health and Medical Tourism Pvt Ltd, today announced that it would set up 125 clinics by the year-end, most of them in rural areas and small towns. These clinics, which will cost about Rs 5 crore, will have a full-time general practitioner.

They would offer outpatient consultation, minor procedures and telemedicine services. The Star Health and Medical's Executive Director, Mr A.G. Gajapathy, said at the press conference that the company would launch the first nine of the 125 clinics on Saturday— all of them in Tamil Nadu.

He said the Star group would also set up a few super specialty hospitals in major cities after a couple of years.
