Mulls setting up unit either in Pune or in NCR

New Delhi May 19 Continental Automotive Systems India (CASI), the automotive systems division of Continental AG, is in the final stages of entering into a joint venture with a local partner to set up a manufacturing facility here. The company is exploring setting up a unit either in Pune or in the National Capital Region.

At present, the $20-billion European company has a CASI technical centre in Bangalore which was set up in February this year, and a liaison office in Gurgaon that has been operational since May last year. However, the company is now looking at a manufacturing facility to supply to the Indian original equipment manufacturers as well as support its global clients.

"The company is likely to finalise its investment plans in the domestic market by the end of this month in association with a local partner," said sources.

Possible products

While the details of the products that would be manufactured here are not known, sources said that it would include some of the products that are currently being developed at its technical centre in Bangalore.

The company's growth plans are also driven by the need to support the growth plans of its global clients in the domestic market, said Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann, President, Continental Automotive Systems and member on the board of Continental AG.

At present, the technical centre supports some of the software development projects for its parent company, which include manufacturing of auto components such as electronic and hydraulic brake, stability and chassis control systems, electronic air suspension systems, sensors, engine management and transmission control systems. Engineer base

The company is also seeking to leverage its technical centre to cater to the engineering and design needs of global auto companies by ramping up its engineers to 200 from the existing 60.

Continental Automotive Systems division, which has about 30,000 employees globally of the total87,000 for the entire group, accrued revenues worth $8 billion last year.
