Telecommunications Marketing - Strategy Info-Tech - Human Resources BSNL offering onsite services to foreign cos Thomas K Thomas
New Delhi May 19 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is making major plans to offer onsite operational services to foreign telecom companies. BSNL, which has a huge workforce of over three lakh employees, will use its human resource to offer its services for managing operations of foreign telecom companies in the international markets. Speaking to Business Line, Mr S.D. Saxena, Director Finance, BSNL, said, "We are taking outsourced managed services in international markets in a big way. We have the expertise to manage an operator's network. This way we will not only earn additional revenues but also deploy our large experienced workforce to the optimum." This will be the first time an Indian telecom company will offer its human resources to run the businesses of another telecom firm. Equipment vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia-Siemens and Alcatel have usually offered their services to manage networks and setting up infrastructure for operators. For instance, in India, cellular operators including Bharti, Idea Cellular and Hutch have outsourced their network management to equipment vendors. While BSNL will not get into setting up infrastructure since it does not manufacture hardware, it plans to get into managing the network for an operator. Mr Saxena said that BSNL was open to tying up with Indian IT firms and other firms such as TCIL that undertake projects on a turnkey basis, to carry out its plans.
New revenue stream
BSNL's revenues have been under pressure due to falling tariffs and decreasing market share. It is now looking out for new streams of revenue from both national and international markets.
