Care for elders TO LOOK into health insurance without age limit and at affordable cost Will suggest ways to incorporate alternative systems of medicine
New Delhi May 22 The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has constituted a seven-member committee to look into the issues related to health insurance for senior citizens. The former National Housing Bank Chairman, Mr K.S. Sastry, will head the committee, which would suggest commercially viable health insurance schemes for senior citizens. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the IRDA said that health insurance for senior citizens requires a careful study by all the stakeholders, including the regulator, government and industry. "Issues relating to health insurance for the elderly need special focus, as they are more vulnerable, due to which they also fall in a higher risk category. In order to study issues involved as well as make recommendations, it has been decided to constitute a committee on health insurance for senior citizens," the IRDA said in its release. Besides, the committee will also provide solutions to problems in extending health insurance to them without age limit and at an affordable cost. The panel will suggest streamlining of procedures so that medical treatment is on `cashless' basis and is rendered promptly. It will also examine the pros and cons of separate health insurance schemes for the elderly considering the profitability and claims ratios of different segments of such insurance and also suggest ways to incorporate alternative systems of medicine into the health insurance system.
