Letters `Prime homilies'
The editorial "Prime homilies" (Business Line, May 26), has rightly stressed that "as much as industry captains, politicians and policy-makers have responsibilities towards the nation". The prerequisite for a country's economic progress is good governance at all levels. The deteriorating law and order situation in the country, for instance, reflects bad governance which, in turn, affects economic growth. Similarly, the prevalence of politician-criminal nexus in some States is the manifestation of the worst kind of governance. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is absolutely correct in expecting industry to respect workers. ut, at the same time, workers too have a responsibility to reciprocate with good returns (output) and not to strike work at the drop of a hat. The successful inter-dependence of all sectors (agriculture, industry and tertiary sectors), and of the government and the three sectors depends on `integrity' everywhere and at all times. That society that lays a strong emphasis on "Truth" in all its activities is indeed a progressive and people-friendly one. S.
