Road block

The work on 52-km connectivity between Haldia dock and National Highway 6 that connects Kolkata with Chennai, already behind the schedule, will be further delayed as the National Highway Authority of India has terminated its contract with the execution agency, a joint venture between a Chinese firm and an Indian partner. The work on the project started in September 2002 and was to have been completed by March 2005.

Already more than two years behind the schedule, the project is only about 40 per cent complete. Interestingly, the project did not face any major problem on land acquisition and related issues. The work on the project will remain suspended till NHAI locates a new contractor. The project cost, originally estimated at Rs 220 crore, will far exceed the estimate. The scope of the work includes, among other things, four-laning the existing two-lane road between Haldia and Kolaghat and construction of three railway over-bridges, three canal bridges and a flyover.
