Air Cargo Air `fright'
There are about 1800 freighters in the air globally and some 1100 of them will be retired over the next two decades. But by that time the world economy would have grown to such a level that mere replacement of ageing freighters will not be able to cope with the projected demand for transportation of cargo by air. According to one estimate, the global freighter fleet should expand to nearly 3900 by 2026. Which means an estimated 3200 new freighters have to be added to the world fleet either by way of new building or through conversion roughly 160 aircraft every year. One interesting feature of the freighter scenario will be that the share of wide-body aircraft is to rise to more than 60 per cent compared to around 50 per cent or so.
It may be noted that three new wide-body freighters 777Fs, 747-8Fs and A330-200Fs by Boeing and Airbus will enter the market within next three years.
