New Delhi May 28 Eli Lilly hopes to provide free treatment to 50,000 diabetics across 50 cities over a period of three years. The campaign, `Peaks and Valleys Complications Check Camp' was launched on Monday and targets high-risk diabetes patients with the hope that they get the right treatment before complications develop. With 46 million diabetes patients, India has the largest population. It is a figure that is predicted to grow by 73 per cent to 80 million by 2025. High-risk patients will be short-listed through free medical camps, before they go through a doctor-supervised programme that includes a glucose test, and test to check complications in kidney, eyes, and of diabetic foot. The company is in the process of finalising the list of doctors it is going to partner with. "The cost of annual treatment before complications arise, which is between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000, considering the national per capita income at a little more than Rs 16,600, is beyond the means of many in this country," said Dr Anoop Misra, Head, Department of Diabetes and Metabolism, at Fortis Group of Hospitals calling for urgent attention to the issue. The campaign coincides with the 85th year celebrations of the launch of insulin by Lilly, which is celebrating Insulin Discovery Week, said Mr Sandeep Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, Eli Lilly and Company (India). Lilly is currently conducting phase trials for inhaled insulin, said Dr Vinod Mattoo, Medical Director for Eli Lilly, India.
