`Scope for more joint ventures with Australia'

Mangalore May 29 There is good scope for joint ventures between India and Australia in various fields, according to Mr Aminur Rahman, Australian Trade Commissioner and Consul General.

Interacting with the members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Tuesday, he said that India has skilled manpower and expertise in technology and Australia has abundant raw materials. This would provide good scope for Indo-Australian joint ventures. Nearly 140 Australian companies have set up shops in India in various fields.

Third largest market

Terming India as the third largest market for Australia, he said nearly 39,000 Indian students are studying in Australia. Australia has raw materials to meet energy needs of India. One of the major corporate houses having interest in energy production is on the lookout for coal in Australia, he said.

Mr Rahman, who visited New Mangalore Port and some of the industrial establishments earlier in the day, said that economic prospects are brighter for the region.

Talks in Mysore

To promote Australian trade in the country, Mr Rahman said, he would be visiting various tier-II cities. In this regard, he held discussions with the representatives of trade and industry in Mysore on Monday.

Mr A.G. Pai, Chief Operating Officer of Mangalore SEZ Company Ltd, gave an overview of the SEZ project in Mangalore. Australia could look at for investments in LNG and other related areas in Mangalore SEZ, he said.

Capt J.P. Menezes, KCCI President, presided over the meeting.
