Bengal may soon offer land for Infosys project

Our Bureau

Kolkata May 31 The West Bengal Government's Department of Information Technology has intensified efforts to identify land for Infosys' proposed facility in Kolkata. According to Mr Siddharth, Principal Secretary in West Bengal's IT Department, the State Government was not able to identify and offer land required for the Infosys project by March this year as committed earlier.

"We are taking some time to locate land for the Infosys project around the Vedic Village area and offer it to the company at a price that is acceptable to them," he said, adding that he was hopeful this would happen sooner than later.

Mr Siddharth told newspersons here that both Infosys and the West Bengal Government "stand committed" to the proposed project in West Bengal. Officials of the State Government have been in constant touch with Infosys in this regard.

At the annual event of Nasscom held in Mumbai earlier in February this year, the West Bengal Minister for IT, Dr Debesh Das, and the IT Secretary, Mr Siddharth, met the CEO of Infosys, Mr Nandan Nilekani, who confirmed that the company stood committed to come to West Bengal.

As late as April, discussions on the Kolkata project were held with the Infosys CEO designate, Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, when Dr Das and Mr Siddharth paid a visit to the Infosys headquarters in Bangalore. "The process of identifying land is currently on and we hope to zero in on it very soon," Mr Siddharth said.
