Board of Approval gives nod to 22 SEZs; 6 in-principle approvals

New Delhi May 31 The Board of Approval for Special Economic Zones (SEZ) granted 22 formal approvals including the high-profile Gopalpur SEZ multi-product promoted by the Tatas in Orissa and six in-principle approvals but deferred a decision on the Mukesh Ambani-promoted Navi Mumbai SEZ on points raised by the representative of the Revenue Department.

Prominent players

Notable among the formal approvals include IT/ITES SEZ by Technopark Pvt Ltd, Tamil Nadu, IT/ITES SEZ by GENPACT India in Andhra Pradesh, IT/ITES SEZ by Shivaji Marg Properties Ltd in Delhi; Biotech SEZ by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, Vadodara, Gems and Jewellery SEZ by Shripur Gold Refinery Ltd at Dhulia, Maharashtra, and three SEZs for textiles, leather and engineering goods by Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) at Kanpur, UP.

In-principle nod

Prominent in-principle approvals granted at today's BoA chaired by the Commerce Secretary, Mr Gopal K Pillai, include SRM Infrastructure Pvt Ltd in Alwar for multi-product SEZ, muti services SEZ by Society for Innovative Education and Development at Alwar, a Carpet and Handicraft SEZ by UPSIDC in Bhadohi, UP, IT/ITES SEZ by Writers and Publishers Ltd in Chindwara, Madhya Pradesh and Chennai Business Park Private Ltd in Kanchipuram district, TN for IT/ITES/BPO and Electronics industries.

Officials in the Commerce Ministry said that a decision on the multiproduct Navi Mumbai SEZ was deferred as the Revenue Department had some reservations about the fencing of five villages and water bodies that fall in the zone. Besides the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust too has raised objections stating that national highway passing through Navi Mumbai SEZ was proposed to be upgraded to four-lane. Mr. Pillai said that the Board would seek comments from the State government and promoters on the points raised by the Revenue department.

So far, 111 SEZs have been notified and 41 are in the process of being notified. In the zones notified up till now, Rs 35,000 crore have been invested and 32,578 direct employment to people have been created.
