Plans are afoot to undertake demonstrations of `thornless' bamboo variety in the districts

Coimbatore June 1 Scientists involved in forestry research at the Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here were called upon to give extra thrust in their research on `edible' bamboo that has found to have gained additional food value in the hospitality industry.

With expanding urbanisation, it has offered good scope of income generation for the farmers living in peri-urban areas, the TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy, told the scientists at the annual research meet on forestry held at the university recently. To promote edible bamboo, plans are afoot to undertake demonstrations of `thornless' bamboo variety in different districts.

Biz models

The TNAU has plansto develop `business models' with trees specifically meant for energy, food, feed, fodder and timber that would serve as demonstration plots for the farmers, Dr Ramasamy said.

He, however, pointed out that such models/technologies should suit the farmers' holdings in terms of easy adaptability and income generation.

The university also has plans to design `recreational forestry park' models and undertake projects related to sandal and red sanders that are lucrative. Emphasis was also laid on research aimed at achieving faster growth of bio-fuel tree crops to reduce harvest periods and promoting `eucalyptus' for use as `biodrainage' in water-logged/effluent drainage terrains.
