`Involve community in preserving heritage'

Environmentalists, activists and forestry experts, debating on the plus-minuses of "Community Managemehere recently, highlighted the need to not only create awareness amongst people towards environment protection, but also on the need to sensitise them in accepting that community involvement was more important for preserving natural heritage.
The national-level debate, held to mark UNEP's World Environment Day tomorrow, was organised by the Centre for Ecological Movement (CEMO), NGO dedicated to the cause of conservation of forests, wildlife and the environment.
Diverse views
While development planner Madhu Sarin asserted that community participation in forest management would yield positive results as exemplified in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh through the panchayat programmes, Prof Amiya Kumar Bagchi, economist, felt that involving communities in forest management programmes would not in any way help preserve forests. He said the responsibilities should remain with the Government, as it alone had the required infrastructure, knowhow and specialists to handle vast areas of forest land.
