Agri-Biz & Commodities - Coconut & Copra
On a slippery path

K.K. Mustafah

NEGLECT, COMPETITION: Coconut oil being weighed before sales at an oil mill in Kochi, Kerala. Wild fluctuations in oil prices and neglect of coconut farmers has hit the copra milling industry in the country severely.

Coconut oil prices touched all time high of Rs 7,480 a quintal in January 2005 but since then, it has declined. On Monday, it was quoted at Rs 4,650. Acceptance of palm oil, particularly in Kerala due to its competitive price, has also hit the milling industry.
