The Tuticorin-based Fisheries College and Research Institute will undertake a study on fish resources in the Gulf of Mannar and the potential threats to them.

According to Prof V.K. Venkataramani, Dean of the Research Institute, the aim is to evolve a procedure for bio-diversity and sustainable fishing practices.

The Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve Trust will be allotting Rs 10.93 lakh for the project and the report would be submitted by July 31.

Strategies for conserving 20 commercially prominent varieties would be prepared, he said.

The report would suggest establishing biological reference points for fishery resources in the Gulf based on different mathematical models for stock assessment and technical measures need for conservation and management of fishery, the sources added.
