Trade & Labour Unions Seafarers union threatens stir over interim relief Our Bureau
Mumbai June 8 The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) has threatened to spearhead an agitation by ratings and petty officers on board Indian-flagged vessels if the ship owners failed to restore payment of interim relief by June 12. In a statement, Mr Abdulgani Y. Serang, General Secretary of the union, said the National Maritime Board (India) agreement for ratings and petty officers working on offshore, home-trade and foreign-going Indian vessels was going on. But in the meantime, the Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA) has asked its member lines to discontinue payment of interim relief. NUSI had written a letter to INSA last month, protesting against the discontinuation of interim relief, as it would mean loss of income for ratings and petty officers. INSA wrote back to NUSI later in the month, assuring that it will again instruct its member lines to start payment of interim relief till the agreement is finalised. "But this instruction has been only on paper and nothing concrete has emerged. Seafarers are already feeling the pinch as their earnings has been reduced considerably due to the stoppage of interim relief," he said
