Imports hit domestic areca prices

Aravindan

Kottayam, June 12

The arecanut market is facing a crisis following the widespread availability of imported material to the consuming sector. The price of indigenously produce is gradually melting down with the price for new arecanut rules between Rs 64 and Rs 66 a kg according to informed sources.

The north Indian buyers who dominated the domestic market now procure the imported areca at Rs 52-68 a kg. Local demand has touched the bottom line. Though the arrivals from the farmers continue to be only moderate, there are no buyers for this, sources close to Campco revealed. This has adversely affected the areca growers in Kerala while the picture emerging Karnataka is also not different.
