Electronics exports up 35% at Rs 1.53 lakh cr

New Delhi June 22 Electronics exports are estimated to have jumped 35 per cent in 2006-07 to Rs 1,53,300 crore, with IT software and services sector accounting for over 92 per cent share in the overall export basket.

In the electronics hardware segment, export of consumer electronics, industrial electronics, computers, communication and broadcast equipment, and components touched Rs 11,500 crore in the financial year 2007, rising from Rs 9,625 crore in the previous year. Computer software exports at Rs 141,800 crore was up 36 per cent in rupee terms and 32 per cent in dollar terms during the fiscal.

Production

According to the data by Department of IT, the overall electronics production in India jumped 29 per cent in 2006-07 to an estimated Rs 2,45,600 crore with software industry accounting for the bulk 73 per cent of the overall production.

Production of consumer electronics, industrial electronics, computers, communication and broadcast equipment, strategic electronics and components reached Rs 66,000 crore, while software production — domestic and exports combine — stood at Rs 1,79,600 crore.

"Software and services industry continues to be the dominating factor in the overall growth of the Indian industry. In 2005-06, the Indian software and services industry exports witnessed healthy growth, its total exports reaching Rs 1,04,100 crore an increase of 33 per cent in dollar terms and 30 per cent in rupee terms over the previous fiscal," it said.

Consumer electronics sector is estimated to achieve a production level of Rs 20,000 crore during 2006-07 compared with Rs 18,000 crore in the financial year 2006, a growth of 11 per cent. The fast growing segments during the year were colour TV, DVD players, and home theatre systems. The colour TV production has shot up to over 12 million units during the year 2006-07. The flat segment CTVs now accounts for over 50 per cent of the total domestic TV production.

"The PC sales are expected to cross 6.5 million units during the year 2006-07. The high growth in PC sales was attributed to increased consumption by industry verticals such as telecom, banking and financial services, manufacturing, education, retail, and BPO/ITES as well as major e-governance initiatives of Central and State governments," it said.
