Job profiles, roles key for `executive batch' in IIM-C

The time and effort spared by serving executives to return to classrooms for pursuing studies is a clear indicator of the level of motivation and ambition...

Thiruvananthapuram June 25 Profiles and roles offered, along with salaries, could well be the differentiator the Class of 2007 at the Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPEX) in IIM-Calcutta (IIM-C) is looking for ahead of the placement season.

The time and effort spared by serving executives to return to classrooms for pursuing management studies is a clear indicator of the level of motivation and ambition, said Mr Ashok Ashta, Student Representative, and Prof Leena Chatterjee, Convener, PGPEX Placement Committee.

WORK EXPERIENCE

The class comprises students with at least five years of work experience, in some cases extending up to even 16 years. It is but natural that profiles and roles offered shall be an important differentiator along with salaries.

The current class of 39 is from diverse sectors, including IT/ITES, energy, telecom, oil and natural gas, banking, steel, healthcare, textiles, engineering, project consultancy, government administration, the army, and others.

The one-year PGPEX class is set to graduate in November. The goal of the PGPEX programme is to provide trained and experienced leadership to global organisations looking for energy and ideas among its pathfinders.

Asked if a student would have the option of choosing and applying for a job in a `dream company' with preferred profiles, the Placement Committee officials said that it shall be the effort of the placements process `to provide the best possible match for the requirements of the industry'.

`DAY ZERO' COS

They ruled out "day zero" (companies striking deals just when placements open) concept holding any relevance during the PGPEX recruitment phase.

"Given the senior positions we have adopted a `rolling' process that allows for sufficient interaction between prospective employers and students, essential for both parties to assess their mutual fit. Thus, the usual concept of `day zero' shall not apply."

The course is structured to develop experienced and ambitious executives for leadership roles in global organisations. The student selection criteria are geared to screen those whose motivation and ability are aligned to this objective.

Accordingly, the courses and pedagogical methods adopted are designed specially keeping this mission in mind as exemplified by the `international immersion' component, the guest foreign faculty and more applied courses.

GLOBAL EXPOSURE

The international immersion component is part of the holistic effort to train managers to assume positions of leadership in global and globalising organisations. Timed at the end of the core curriculum, it gives participants the opportunity to apply their learning in "live" projects in a real international work environment. It is supplemented well by a number of courses with an international focus.

The programme is designed to prepare leaders for global business. Thus, recruiters of global and globalising organisations would find students ready to assume positions of responsibility within their organisations, irrespective of geographical location.

There is a core course on "Creating and managing new ventures". There is also an elective offered on entrepreneurship to cater to the specific requirements of aspiring entrepreneurs.
