Mangalore June 26 The Union Government will take strict measures to curb the illegal import of arecanut through the Kolkata port, according to the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar.

A press release by the President of the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, said the Minister told this to a delegation of arecanut cooperatives from Karnataka during a meeting in New Delhi recently.

The Minister was informed about the decline in the prices of arecanut in the domestic market due to import, and its impact on growers in the country. The release said the Agriculture Minister has assured the delegation that steps would be taken to curb the illegal import of arecanut from Nepal through the Kolkata port.

Stakeholders' meet

The issue of import of arecanut would be discussed with the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, and a meeting of all the stakeholders from the arecanut sector would be convened soon.

The delegation urged the Government to fix the floor price at Rs 60 a kg for imported white arecanut, and Rs 85 a kg for imported red arecanut.

It also sought the appointment of a nodal agency to check the quality of imported arecanut.

As the arecanut is being imported by undervaluing the commodity, the Government should constitute an expert committee to study the revenue loss in this process, it said.
