Chennai, June 29 The Southern Railway will introduce seven new trains this year, according to its General Manager, Mr Thomas Varghese.

It also plans to increase frequency of five trains and convert two express trains into super-fast trains, Mr Varghese said at a press conference.

Some of the new trains in the Villupuram section will be introduced in December after the 122-km gauge conversion work between Villupuram and Manamadurai is over, he said.

On extending the Mass Rapid Transit System to Velachery (right now trains run between Chennai Beach and Tiruvanmiyur), Mr Varghese said the Southern Railway was ready to commence the extended service.

A formal clearance need to come from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, which is likely to inspect the line shortly.

Southern Railway saw its revenue from passenger traffic increase by 21 per cent to Rs 425 crore during the period April 1 to June 20 compared with revenue of Rs 351 crore for the corresponding period last year.

Earning from freight during the said period increased marginally to Rs 237 crore (Rs 230 crore).
