Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 2 Very soon farmers would be an empowered lot, flashing smart cards and having the power to access computers and a host of services at their nearest primary agriculture cooperatives (PACs).

UTI Technology Solutions Ltd, a Government of India company, and CoOptions Technology Ltd, Hyderabad, have carved out a joint venture SUUTI (Special Undertaking of UTI), with a mandate to provide computers at PACs, which could play the role of a local financial hub.

Later, it is proposed to tie up with insurance firms such as LIC and mutual funds and other services companies to offer a host of services to these farmers.

The venture was formally launched by Dr C. Rangarajan, Chairman of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, and plans to cover about 60 million farmers, 25,000 PACs of the one lakh PACs spread across the country.

Pilot projects

The Chairman of SUUTI Tech Options, and CEO of UTI Technology Solutions, Mr M. Parameswaran, said: “there is no problem of funding PACs and together we plan to reach out these solutions to various states in the country showcasing the successful pilot projects.”
