‘People management key to global enterprise’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 7 Efficient handling of issues pertaining to the integration of people and business processes is vital for an organisation to be a global enterprise, according to Mr Baba N. Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Forge Ltd.

Speaking on ‘Becoming a Global Enterprise’ at the 27th Members’ Conference of the Centre for Organisation Development (COD) in Hyderabad on Saturday, Mr Kalyani said Indian firms had the advantage of efficient management teams.

“Indians excel in people’s management which comes handy in managing people and processes abroad when a firm goes global,” he observed.

Mr Habil F. Khorakiwala, Chairman Wockhardt Ltd said global perception of Indian companies has been changing.

“Till now, most Indian companies were acquiring not-so-well-managed companies overseas. But now, Indian industry is entering into a phase where companies are eyeing better managed entities too,” he said.

Observing that competitiveness was vital for any industry, Mr Khorakiwala said the cost-advantage factor was fast eroding in sectors like pharmaceuticals.

“Increasingly global manufacturers are setting up manufacturing facilities in India through acquisition and other routes. This is the case with the generic space adding further pressure on Indian companies to be competitive,” he added.

Mr Subir Raha, former chairman of Oil and Natural Gas Commission said creditworthiness was one of the important parameters for companies to be global. Creation of a talent pool and best business practices were also important, he added.

Mr B.L. Maheshwari, Chairman, COD welcomed the gathering.
