‘Talent is main ingredient for growth of IT sector’

Kolkata, July 9 West Bengal’s Minister for IT, Dr Debesh Das, has stressed upon the imperatives for churning out technically-qualified professionals for the IT sector in larger numbers. This would be necessary if West Bengal were to meet the demand for an additional two lakh professionals that were expected to be engaged in the IT sector by 2010.

Speaking at the `ITCon – Destination East’, a two-day seminar organised here today by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (Webel), Dr Das said talent was the main ingredient for the growth of the IT sector. While West Bengal has an Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Statistical Institute and many engineering colleges, it would be imperative to augment the number of engineering colleges in the State. The corporate sector also had a role to play in this regard, he said.

Dr Das dwelt at length on the need for connectivity in rural areas which, he said, was key to bridging the digital divide in the country.

“The common people do not understand how IT can make a difference to the lives of the ordinary people.

IT should be leveraged upon to provide better services to the people, so that they understand its impact on their lives,” he said.

The Minister enumerated on how West Bengal was gearing up its IT infrastructure to attract more investment to the sector.

With regard to incentives, he said that, among other things, the State was offering training subsidy to companies for training people for the IT industry.
