Vizag Mayor promises water to Jindal plant

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, July 11As the controversy is raging on the proposed bauxite mining in Visakhapatnam district and the alumina refinery in the S. Kota mandal of Vizianagaram district, the Mayor of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Mr P. Janardhana Rao, made an announcement at a Congress party workers’ meeting here on Wednesday that the Corporation would provide water (8 mgd) to the refinery to be set up by the Jindal group in Vizianagaram district. He said a resolution would be moved in the Council later.

Earlier, at its Council meeting on June 26, the GVMC had passed a resolution setting aside the order issued by the GVMC Commissioner allotting 8 mgd of Godavari waters to the Jindal project.

The Mayor clarified on Wednesday to his party (Congress) workers that the earlier resolution had been passed only as the civic authorities had not taken the permission of the Council before allotment of water to the Jindal project.

As the Opposition had raised the issue and the majority of the members felt that prior permission of the Council was necessary for allotting water to the project, the resolution had been passed cancelling the order of the Commissioner.

The Mayor, however, did not specify how the GVMC, already facing water scarcity, would provide water to the Jindal project.
