Striking balance

Exports vs imports: Nutmeg harvesting in progress at a farm near Kochi, Kerala. Production of nutmeg and mace has remained stagnant due to lack of support and change in climate leading to increased fungus and pest attacks. Good international prices have resulted in much of the local production being exported. This, in turn, has led to rise in imports. Nutmeg production in 2006-07 has been estimated at 2,400 tonnes of which 2,100 tonnes valued at Rs 42.74 crore were exported. This is against exports of 1,530 tonnes worth Rs 31.17 crore the previous year. Imports were 1,500 tonnes worth over Rs 30 crore against 1,300 tonnes a year ago. –
