‘Second green revolution needed’

Our Bureau

Mangalore, July 12

A second green revolution is needed to raise the growth rate of agricultural GDP in the country, according to Mr B. Sambamurthy, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank.

Delivering the keynote address at the silver jubilee celebrations of Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) at the regional training centre of Nabard here on Thursday, he said that one of the major challenges of the11th Plan will be to reverse the deceleration in agricultural growth from 3.2 per cent observed between 1980 and 1997 to a trend average of around 2 per cent subsequently.

To reverse this trend, corrective policies must not only focus on the small and marginal farmers who continue to deserve special attention, but also on middle and large farmers who suffer from productivity stagnation arising from a variety of constraints.

He urged the need for new investments in the agriculture system.
