Mumbai, July 13 Barry Callebaut, the Zurich-based manufacturer of high quality cocoa and chocolate products, is planning to supply Indian food companies with its chocolates manufactured from its factory in Singapore.

Ms Gaby Tschofen, Vice-President – Corporate Communication of Barry Callebaut, told Business Line, “In India, we are looking at working with international and national companies in the foods business and also provide tra ining to chocolate artisans in this country. We do not intend building a factory in India, instead would be supplying chocolate to our Indian clients from our factory in Singapore.”

This September, the company would start its operations with a minimal investment by renting a sales office in Mumbai with an employee base of 4-5 people.

With intentions of developing its business in Indian, Barry Callebaut expects to study the Indian market initially before expanding its operations.

Global players

In fact global players such as The Hershey Company and Cadbury have already forged strategic relationships and are likely to give the company some business in India.

As Mr Anand Kripalu, Managing Director, Cadbury India, says, “Globally, Cadbury already has a strategic alliance with Barry Callebaut for supplying chocolates to Cadbury. In India, we may look at that option but there are no plans at this point of time.” Tapping into a new area of training in chocolate making in India, Barry Callebaut is also launching its chocolate academy targeting existing professionals and artisans with its courses and workshops.

“With our chocolate academy we in intend giving a platform to those who want to get trained in the art of making chocolate. These would range from chefs at hotels to bakers in the country,” added Ms Tschofen with plans of launching the academy in December.

Barry Callebaut is present in 23 countries, operates more than 30 production facilities and employs approximately 8,000 people.

It also provides a comprehensive range of services in the fields of product development, processing, training and marketing.
