Space tech can improve agriculture: Kakodkar

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, July 14 Indian agriculture can be made globally competitive and the livelihood of farmers — and thereby the food security of the country — can be ensured by application of new technologies, especially space technologies, according to Dr K. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Inaugurating a seminar on dissemination of space technologies, organised in Andhra University here on Saturday by the Federation of Farmers’ Associations, Andhra Pradesh, he said many of the space technologies could bring about a dramatic improvement in Indian agriculture.

It should be possible to achieve the transition from mere subsistence farming to sustainable farming and then onto remunerative farming, he said.

Tech yields

Dr Kakodkar said the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) had developed 27 high-yielding varieties by applying some of the technologies and a low-cost model, Akruti, had been developed in the centre for taking these technologies to the rural areas.

He suggested that the model be used for dissemination space technologies, and others, relevant to agriculture. Prof L. Venugopala Reddy, Vice-chancellor of Andhra University, presided over the seminar.
