The shipping industry significantly lags behind in its use of information technology when compared with other industries, according to a new book that addresses the innovative opportunities for shipping offered by IT. The book launched by Nautical Institute argues that traditional maritime culture has been a barrier to progress and this has two consequences. First, the shipping industry is not able to exploit the benefits of the Internet and high speed communication as the re is no adequate infrastructure in place and, second, there is little operating experience to capitalise on the opportunity created by wide and faster access to information. Mobile satellite technology could revolutionise the way the communications are used at sea in future, says the book.
