Intel goes rural with lend-n-lease tie-ups

Its partnership with ICICI Bank will leverage the reseller & assembler network.

Anand Parthasarathy

Bangalore, July 22 The world’s number one chipmaker Intel has tied up separately with the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) and ICICI Bank to reach out to the burgeoning small enterprise sector as well as the rural heartland of 6.5-lakh villages.

The company’s Marketing Director for South Asia, Mr John McClure, announced the tie-ups at a media conclave in Jaipur.

Educational Packages

An MoU with IL&FS will see the latter help put up over 1-lakh common service centres in the rural hinterland — equipped to provide PCs, Internet — and a variety of locally relevant services. Intel will make available expertise on the hardware and software configurations as well as educational packages under its “World Ahead” programme.

Its partnership with ICICI Bank will leverage the large reseller and PC assembler network to provide computer muscle to the SME sector. The ICICI Senior General Manager for SMEs, Mr Vijay Chandok, explained that the bank hoped to lend to this sector and be the provider of financing for at least 10 per cent of its IT related needs. Mr Ramamurthy Sivakumar, Managing Director of Intel South Asia, explained that the company’s labs in India would support these initiatives by creating platforms tailored for Indian needs and conditions.
