Sports Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather States - Tamil Nadu Chennai to get weatherproof cricket stadium for World Cup
Our Bureau Chennai, July 23 Cricket lovers will have an ultra modern, weatherproof cricket stadium in time for the 2011 World Cup to be held in Chennai. The stadium is to come up on 50 acres land to be given on a 30-year lease to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) by the State Government. The stadium will be on Old Mahabalipuram Road at ‘Karunguzhi Pallam’ village. It would be a world-class facility not just for the World Cup but also provide a range of infrastructure that would prove crucial to the development of cricket. No longer would the cricket fan have to fear the rains washing out a match, once the TNCA plans work out. According to an official press release, the Tamil Nadu Government took the decision to lease the land at a meeting of the Cabinet here today. ‘Great thing’
The President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, Mr N. Srinivasan, said that it is a ‘great thing’ that the State Government has done for the development of cricket. The TNCA is grateful to the State Government for such a decision. This paves the way for creating a modern facility that would be a fitting venue for the World Cup and provide the cricket-loving crowd the comforts that would match the best in the world. ‘Combat weather’
The TNCA was looking at a facility that would “combat weather.” The association was looking at various aspects including possibilities of a covered stadium, Mr Srinivasan said. The Government’s decision to lease the large area of land also opens up possibilities of creating more than one ground and facilities for the development of cricket, he said. The TNCA is a 75-year-old institution that promotes cricket from the grassroots level in the districts to international matches.
