COAI opposes move to auction 2G spectrum

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 24 The Cellular Operators Association of India has told the Union Ministry of Communications that any move to auction additional spectrum for existing second generation mobile services was against the terms of the unified access licence.

COAI, representing the GSM operators, said that the licence stipulated that mobile companies would get spectrum as and when they reached a specific subscriber base. This comes as the Department of Telecom is planning to cap spectrum allocation to mobile operators at 6.2 Mhz for GSM players and then auction out the remaining.

The move is supported by CDMA operators who said that as per the licence agreement, the Government had not committed more than 6.2 Mhz to the GSM players and, therefore, any subsequent allocation may be auctioned.

COAI has written to Mr A. Raja, the Union Minister for Communication and IT, opposing the move.

COAI has quoted a number of official communication from DoT whereby, additional spectrum has been promised to operators on an ongoing basis.
