Tourism States - West Bengal In bad shape
Heritage building: The National Library building in Kolkata — known in history as Belvedere — is in an advanced state of disrepair. The edifice, in the middle of expansive grounds, is not a heritage building under the relevant State Act because it belongs to the Union Government and is, presumably, not in danger of being acquired and pulled down by rapacious real estate wolves. But it is clear that something needs to be done by way of repairing the building which, as far as its core is concerned, is more than 250 years old and has been associated with Mughal as well as British imperial rule since the 18th Century. In the early days, it was of course outside the limits of the town of Calcutta and was the country seat of its occupants. In the middle of the 19th Century, it was acquired by the Bengal Government and turned into a residence for the Lieutenant-Governors, at a time when Government House (today’s Raj Bhavan) was home to Governors-General and Viceroys. It was on the grounds of Belvedere that the famous duel between Philip Francis and Warren Hastings was staged in August 1780, which led to the former being injured, though not grievously. —
