Loan-waiver scheme sought for AP ryots

Ch. R.S. Sarma

Guntur, July 30 The Union Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government should make an earnest attempt to solve the problem of rural indebtedness by formulating and implementing a loan waiver scheme for small and marginal farmers in the State, numbering 1 crore, said Dr Y. Sivaji, former member of the Rajya Sabha and president of AP Tobacco Farmers’ Association.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he said that as the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would be reviewing the progress of agriculture in the State in Hyderabad along with the Chief Minister and the officials of the Agriculture Department on Tuesday, the issue should be given prominence. “The step is absolutely essential to prevent large-scale suicides of farmers in the State,” he said.
