Builders’ forum steps in to help clean up Kochi

Our Bureau

Kochi, Aug. 1 The Kerala Builders Forum is planning to help Kochi in disposing its waste.

The association has proposed microbial composting of biodegradable waste, which is convenient for metro cities. It is estimated that the city churns out about 250 tonnes of household garbage everyday, the office bearers of the Forum said.

The microbes are sprayed on the waste, which will breakdown the waste in about 15-20 days. It will also yield high quality manure. An area of 10x10 feet can handle 150-200 kg of waste everyday. It is claimed to be suited for State environment and weather conditions.

The Forum members said the project has been successful in Kozhikode Medical College, Ernakulam General Hospital, Koothatukulam Government Hospital, Karakkonam Medical College and Thrikkakara Grama Panchayat. Non-recyclable materials, and petroleum based products can be powdered and re-used instead of bitumen for tarring roads. The project is under discussion with the Public Works Department, they said.

The project is planned for 50 residential areas free of cost and later it would be extended to 200 housing projects in three years. The Forum plans to impart professional training to nearly 1,000 participants.

Initially, units like Kudumbasree and other self help units will spearhead the project. A nodal agency is already formed under the leadership and financial support of the Builders Forum for the smooth running of the project throughout the year.
