Plantations Imports dog arecanut market
Kottayam, Aug. 1 The arecanut market continues to stagnate due to heavy imports, according to sources. The price still rule at Rs 62-68 a kg. So long as the selling rate of imported arecanut is Rs 20-25 a kg less that domestic rates here, the chances for improvement are remote. Traders are directly importing to meet their requirements. In UP and Bihar, red and white varieties are used for the manufacture of gutkha. Though the imported arecanut is inferior in quality, north Indian demand is high in view of its low price. Manufacturers, who are not much keen on quality, depend on the imported varieties. Since there is no demand from North India, the prices are not picking up. Arrivals, on the other hand, are very poor. In Karnataka also, growers are holding back their stocks and only limited consignments are reaching the market, Campco sources said. – Aravindan
