Lanco Trust in pact to help trafficking victims

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 4 Lanco Institute of General Humanitarian Trust (Light), a corporate social responsibility arm of the Lanco group, has signed up with the Geneva-based, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), to assist people trapped in commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking.

The idea is to assist survivors of trafficking and other vulnerable people below the poverty line. This agreement, entered here today by Light and IOM, marks the beginning of a series of initiatives in the areas of rehabilitation and empowerment of Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking (OCSET).

This initiative will also cover other vulnerable groups like Mathammas and Jogins by providing necessary skills for their alternative employment.

The Director-General of IOM, Mr Brunson McKinley, said this would initially be a pilot project that would cover parts of Andhra Pradesh and possibly later move on to other parts of the country.

IOM has more than 120 member States, and expects India also to become a member to this social service organisation.

Typically, IOM partners countries and corporates and assists them to play a key role in bringing people into the mainstream.

The Chairman of Light and Member of Parliament, Mr L. Rajagopal, said the agreement gains lot of relevance in the light of the growing magnitude of human trafficking ad prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the State.

Since the problem is on the rise in and around Vijayawada, the focus of activities during the initial phase will be concentrated there.
