70% households without elders, says survey

New Delhi, Aug. 4 Close to 2.2 per cent of males and around 4.1 per cent of females in the country get married below the legal age, according to the Baseline Survey Report: 2004. The report also states that about 71 per cent of households in the country have no elders(60 years and above).

The survey is the first documented report that provides bench mark data ad the latest replacement of Sample Registration System (SRS) sample in 2004 for future comparison. Based on survey in the newly selected 7,597 sample units (4,433 rural and 3,164 urban) drawn on the 2001 census frame and spread across all the States and Union Territories, it covers information gathered for about 1.34 million households and nearly 6.7 million people.

Besides information on population distribution, age at marriage, etc, which is usually contained in the annual SRS reports, the report throws light on items such as school attendance, conditional sex-ratio by birth order and personal habits like smoking, drinking and chewing paan and food habits.

Some of the salient findings of reportare; on an average, the difference between the age at marriage of males and females is 4.7 years , and nearly four out of five children (boys and girls) in the age group of 7-9 years attend school.

About 2.4 per cent of children aged 0-4 are not staying with their parents and three out of four persons aged 15 years and above are non-vegetarian .
