SEZs: Removing misconceptions

Stuck with problem of availability of land, SEZs have created lots of controversies. To achieve development and solve problems like unemployment, the misconceptions have to be removed. A good land-use policy is needed to make best use of the available land. The trouble arises when the land is taken away from the people who are depended on it for their livelihood. To solve the problem, your editorial on “Ground realities” (Business Line, Aug 3), had suggested the Tamil Nadu model and Pune model. SEZs provide employment to different set of people creating a new class of rich. But a change in attitude is needed. If the SEZs absorb excess labour and benefit the poor, why should there be so many problems? It should actually solve problems.
