India becomes fifth largest crude steel producer

New Delhi, Aug. 7 The capacity expansions being carried out by various steel majors and the increase in crude steel production has pushed up India’s ranking to the fifth largest crude steel producer in the world.

A release from the Steel Ministry said, “Based on the revised data for crude steel, calculations for the calendar year 2006 shows India has achieved production of 49.45 million tonnes (mt) as against 44 mt in the pre-revised data. This has made India the fifth largest global crude steel producer as compared to the seventh position held earlier.”

According to revised data compiled by the Joint Plant Committee, the crude steel production is pegged at 50.71 mt for 2006-07 as against 46.46 mt in 2005-06 fiscal.
