‘Retail boom to trigger growth in floriculture’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 9 The boom in the retail segment will give a big boost to the nascent Rs 1,000-crore floriculture segment. This in turn would generate lakhs of jobs in rural areas, according to Mr S. Jafar Naqvi, Chief Co-Ordinator and President of iFlora (Indian Flowers and Ornamental Plants Welfare Association).

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Naqvi said the retail majors had been seeking large-scale supply of bouquets.

“There is a huge demand for flowers and plants as retail chains multiply. But they are not able to find people who can supply them in bulk. Besides, there is a huge potential globally,” he said.

Flora expo in Sept

Mr Naqvi was here to announce the third edition of Flora Expo scheduled to be held in Delhi in September.

This would be agood opportunity for young entrepreneurs, he said.

“Despite being home to a wide variety of flora, we are not able to play a major role in the international floriculture business. Our share is just 0.2 per cent in the global business,” he said.
