A view of the Pokkali paddy fields in Pizhala, one of the tiny islands in the Kochi backwaters, where the traditional rice-and-prawn farming is still undertaken. The Pokkali rice is grown organically without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. The Kerala Government is trying to promote Pokkali as an organic product and has filed an application to get Pokkali accepted as a Geographic Indication under the Intellectual Property regime.
