Cars Corporate - New Projects
Our Bureau Kolkata, Aug 10 The small car project of Tata Motors in Singur is getting delayed, according to Mr Ratan Tata. “We’ll however use our capability to make good the delay,” Mr Tata said, while talking to newspersons at the end of Tata Tea Ltd’s annual general meeting here on Friday. Mr Tata declined to give any probable date for the roll out of the first car from the Singur factory saying, “It will help the vested interests”. “We are facing a good deal of controversy, which appears to be politically motivated”. “West Bengal is the most investment-friendly State in the country,” he said, adding, “the State Government is enlightened and the Chief Minister pragmatic”. In the past, the eastern region in general and West Bengal in particular were ignored and there were no opportunities and, therefore, somebody had to make a start. Tata Motors set up the small car project near Kolkata because “we wanted visibility and we would like to showcase a project which the people will be proud of”. The Singur project, he felt, would be the forerunner for more such projects in the State. Asked if the Tatas were planning more projects in West Bengal, Mr Tata replied that it was difficult to say anything at the moment as much would depend on how the ongoing projects took shape. The proposed cancer research centre and the hospital at Rajarhat near Kolkata would not only be a premier institute of India but also of global standard.
